Buying Lithium Batteries? Run These 7 Checks Before You Sign

I’ve spent the past eight years handling lithium battery orders for a small storage integrator, and I keep a file I’m not proud of: a list of the mistakes I’ve made while buying cells, packs, and the parts around them. Fourteen significant mistakes. Roughly $47,000 in wasted budget, not counting lost weeks. In Q1 2024, I turned that file into a pre-purchase checklist for our team. In this article I’m sharing the same procedure.

Run these seven checks in this order, before you compare final prices. They’re not meant to be clever. They’re meant to catch the boring problems that turn expensive.

Start at the manufacturer’s official website, not the distributor PDF

In 2018 I almost paid a company that looked like the official distributor for a battery manufacturer we used on every project. They sent a quote with a clean datasheet, stock photographs, and a price that made sense. The only reason we caught them: I checked the official site before issuing the PO. Their datasheet didn’t match the current official document. Old logo, old spec. We walked away.

So the first check on any battery brand is the official website. If you’re evaluating EVE Energy, for instance, you’ll find current cells, modules, and storage products on the official pages at eve-energy.com. Search for “EVE Energy official website” rather than trusting the first distributor ad. Download the datasheet from there, check the date, and compare it with the document on your desk.

A brand without a functioning official website, or without a single master datasheet, is a red flag. Even more so in 2025.

Map the real production footprint

I used to think production location mattered less than spec numbers. It does matter. Specs are only true if there is a factory capable of producing them consistently.

Ask where the cells are made and where the packs are assembled. If the supplier can’t answer or says “we have partners,” dig one more level. For a long-term supply agreement, look at public production plans. EVE Energy, for example, has publicly announced an Indonesia battery plant with capacity coming in phases through 2025 and 2026. That type of announcement is useful because it tells you a company is investing in actual manufacturing capacity, not just building a brand.

When I hear the word “global” now, I translate it as “let’s see your factory audit report and your announced capacity plans.”

Ask for usable capacity and compare usable with usable

One of the most common questions customers ask me when they start comparing home batteries is, “what is the capacity of a Tesla Powerwall 3?” On Tesla’s official product page, as of January 2025, the answer is 13.5 kWh usable energy. Notice that word: usable. It’s the number that actually matters.

I made the opposite mistake in 2022 on a microgrid order. I compared nominal cell capacities, quoted a client a usable number that didn’t exist after the BMS cutoffs, and we had to add extra modules after the first performance test. The correction cost us time and about $2,600 in logistics.

Now every comparison table in our office has two columns: nominal capacity and usable capacity. If a vendor gives you only one number, ask for the second and ask for the conditions: at what charge/discharge rate, at what temperature, and at what depth of discharge. The difference between those two numbers is real, and it should be written down before contract signature.

Get the current path drawn out—BMS, fuse, and battery disconnect included

In mid-2022, I approved a 12V 200 Ah lithium battery for a boat refit. The battery had good capacity, the price was fair, and the BMS specification looked fine. Nobody asked about the switch that would isolate the battery during maintenance. The surveyor caught it during the inspection, and we paid $430 and lost a week retrofitting a proper disconnect.

A boat battery disconnect doesn’t have to be expensive, but it needs to be DC-rated, installed in the positive line close to the battery, and written into the order. The same logic applies to most systems: buy the whole current path, not just the battery.

Ask your supplier to send a system diagram. It should include the BMS limits, the main fuse or breaker, the wire sizes, and the battery disconnect. For marine work, ABYC E-11 is the usual reference for DC electrical systems. If a battery vendor can’t explain what sits between the battery and the loads, they’re selling components, not a safe system.

Find the cell maker behind the label

Brand labels on finished batteries tell you very little about the cells inside. There are good pack brands that buy cells from tier-one manufacturers, and there are good brands that make their own cells. There are also products that hide the source completely.

A customer asked me last year to review a quote for a 12V “MehrPow lithium battery.” My first question was not about price. I asked which cell model was inside, which BMS it used, and whether the manufacturer would put the answers in writing. The answers determine the quality, not the sticker. The brand wasn’t the issue—the missing information was.

When a quote says it uses “grade A cells,” that sentence is meaningless unless the cell manufacturer is named. If it says “EVE cells,” we verify the model markings against the official cell datasheet. That takes two minutes and prevents a very long failure-analysis meeting later.

Testing a sample is good; testing the production lot is better

In early 2023, we approved a large cell order because the pre-production sample was excellent. The production lot was not excellent. Capacity measured low on about 12 percent of cells, and internal resistance spread was wider than the datasheet allowed. Because we had no lot acceptance test in the contract, we spent two weeks arguing about responsibility.

That argument taught me a rule: never let a sample be the only quality gate.

Add a pre-shipment inspection and a lot acceptance test with clear acceptance criteria. Test capacity at a defined C-rate, check internal resistance, check open-circuit voltage, and inspect date codes. Since we started doing this in Q1 2024, we’ve caught eleven non-conforming lots before shipment. Not every problem was a deal-breaker, but we found out about it while we could still act.

Put every cost on one page before anyone signs

In 2021, I chose a supplier whose unit price was about nine percent lower than the nearest alternative. The final cost, after freight, insurance, import fees, and the extra cable and connectors they didn’t mention, ended up slightly higher than the “expensive” quote. The vendor didn’t deliberately hide anything. I simply didn’t ask what was not included.

That is when I learned my current habit: ask “what’s NOT included?” before asking “what’s the price?” On storage systems, the list to check is long: cells, BMS, cabinet, breakers, internal and external cabling, installation, commissioning, software, shipping, customs, taxes, and spare parts. Also ask which Incoterm applies and where risk transfers.

A transparent supplier who itemizes everything—even when the total is higher—is more likely to be the cheapest supplier in the end. That’s the opinion I’ve formed after eight years and too many surprises.

Red flags I no longer ignore

  • No official website, or a datasheet that only exists on a distributor’s site.
  • Capacity quoted without C-rate, temperature, and depth of discharge.
  • A system diagram that ends at the battery terminals.
  • A supplier who cannot name the cell and BMS inside the pack.
  • A one-line total price without Incoterms or exclusions.

One last note: the reference points in this article were accurate as of January 2025—EVE Energy’s official product pages, its Indonesia battery plant timeline for 2025 and 2026, the 13.5 kWh usable capacity of Tesla Powerwall 3, and the marine reference in ABYC E-11. The storage market changes quickly, so verify current specs before you rely on them in a contract.

You don’t need to be the smartest person in the purchasing meeting. Be the most boring. Check the official source, check the factory, compare usable capacity, draw the current path, identify the cells, test the lot, and add the full cost before signing. Seven checks feel like a lot until the $47,000 mistake file gets another entry.
