Buying a 24V 230Ah LiFePO4 Battery: A Buyer's Checklist (EVE Energy D4S Edition)

I manage purchasing for a small manufacturing services company. Before you ask: no, I'm not a battery engineer. 1. Start with the Actual Load, Not the Listing Title

In my first year, I made the classic specification error: I saw the right voltage and the right amp-hours and assumed it would work. It didn't. The battery pack could deliver, say, 50A continuous, and the motor-start load needed 120A for three seconds. That's a big difference.

Before you send a quote request, write down:

  • Nominal voltage: for LiFePO4, a 24V system is usually 25.6V nominal (8 cells in series).

  • Continuous discharge current in amps.
  • Peak/surge current and how long the BMS allows it.
  • Charging current, especially if you're using a solar charge controller.

If the listing mentions a 'D4S lithium battery,' treat that as a model or cell family, not as a complete specification. Ask the vendor: which exact D4S cell version is inside, and what BMS settings does the pack ship with?

2. Check the EVE Energy Logo and Cell Date Codes

EVE Energy cells are commonly re-branded and copied. I'm not saying every listing is fake, but counterfeits exist. A legitimate EVE cell will usually carry the EVE Energy logo, a lot number, a date code, and a QR code that traces back to their factory system. If you're ordering a full pack, ask for a photo of the cells before assembly. A vendor who cannot show that should not get the order.

This step sounds obvious, but it's easy to skip when you're busy. People assume the famous brand logo won't be forged. The reality is that a logo is just a label. The QR code and lot traceability are harder to fake.

3. Ask What's NOT Included Before You Ask the Price

This is my favorite procurement habit. I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included' before 'what's the price.' The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.

The first quote we received for a 24V 230Ah LiFePO4 battery was lower than the other one by about $400. It looked like we found a great vendor. Then came the connector kit, the BMS Bluetooth dongle, the shipping fee for dangerous goods, the custom bracket, and the fact that the battery did not include a charger. 6. Insist on Certificates Before Payment

If they can't send it, or if the listed company name on the certificate doesn't match the vendor's name, that's a red flag.

  • UL 1973 or UL 2054, if it will be installed in the U.S.

And don't accept 'We can send after payment.' Get the paperwork before the PO. If a vendor has the documents, they can send them within a day.

7. Order a Sample Before You Order the Fleet

I know this is annoying. The project is behind; the budget is approved; everyone wants the batteries installed. But one sample unit costs far less than replacing ten units from the wrong batch.

When the sample arrives, check the EVE Energy logo and lot code on the cells, test the capacity, and run it through the actual load or a resistive tester. If you're not an engineer, pay someone local for a one-hour bench test. It's worth it.

If a vendor claims the battery or packaging is recyclable, ask where and how. I manage the paperwork, not the chemistry. But the paperwork keeps people safe. Budget for the cables, the certificates, the freight, and the fire extinguisher, and you'll have a much better experience than I did.
